Tree Commission members tour Bartlett Tree Labs
STATESVILLE - A warm sunny day in April found several members of the Statesville Tree Commission touring the renowned Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory near Charlotte. The tour was led by Dr. Bruce Fraderich, Bartlett's director of research and development.

The F. A. Bartlett Tree Expert Co. was founded in 1907 by Francis A. Bartlett to provide preventive care that would assure good health, longevity, beauty and safety for his clients' trees. By 1927, Bartlett had enough scientific work in progress to warrant the establishment of the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories, located first in North Stamford, Connecticut, and, since 1965, on a large property in Charlotte, North Carolina. The permanent laboratories staff consists of Ph.D's in disciplines such as plant pathology, entomology, physiology and soil science. They are guided by technicians with degrees in horticulture, botany, arboriculture, biology, forestry and similar disciplines.

Following an update on current tree conditions and problem diagnosis procedures in the lab, the group enjoyed an up close inspection of a wide variety of tree specimens and growth experiments in the Bartlett arboretum. Discussion topics included pruning methods, recommended specimens for urban planting, planter pit soils and root growth patterns, how to avoid sidewalk upheavals and corrective pruning measures for topped trees.

Participating in the tour were commission members Gordon Kleise, Jan Lefevre, Jane Severson, Jane Srail and Craig Romeo along with Lynn Miller, Statesville's superintendent of parks & public grounds and Bob Peoples, Statesville's utility line clearance supervisor.
