  1. Tree Care community education seminars conducted at Civic Center; including multiple guest speakers and Tree Pruning Makeover by Neal Bedinger of Earth's Greenery Landscaping and Jan Lefevre of Design Detail. Seminars funded by 2005 Urban Community & Forestry Grant

  1. Tree Commission receives $6,500 grant from North Carolina Division of Forest Resources - 2005 Urban Community and Forestry Grant Program for educational seminars and Arbor Day computer hardware and software -- City Council accepts grant
  2. City arborist Lynn Miller promoted to Superintendent of Parks and Public Grounds
  3. City Council approves request for additional $ 1,000 in Tree Commission budget for fiscal budget of $6,000
  4. Barry Gordon assumes Tree of Distinction coordination and billings
  5. Sudden Oak Death found in some North Carolina nurseries
  6. Development continues to eat away at existing tree stands with no provision for prevention in ordinance
  7. Separate domain name & server space secured for Tree Commission website at statesvilletrees.org
  8. First Holiday Sale for Trees of Distinction held
  9. Barry Goldstein and Jane Srail coordinate tree identification program for Boy Scout Jamboree at Allison Woods
  10. 95 trees planted around city: 35 downtown, 25 in Oakwood Cemetery, 15 in Belmont Cemetery, 10 on main street right-of-ways, 10 in parks
  11. Jan Lefevre and Lynn Miller attend Green N Growin' seminars in Greensboro

  1. Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce staff member joins Arbor Day committee
  2. First nomination for Champion Tree received via website
  3. Henkle Road public land investigated for possible tree landscaping
  4. Landscaping certification program investigated
  5. Commission receives permission from City Council to remove dead trees from city planters and fill empty planters with new trees
  6. Tree Commission proposes pruning notification to city - door hanger program begun by city to notify residents of upcoming pruning in advance
  7. City employees complete landscaping installation at Police Department building expansion
  8. Bill Gallaway identifies Alex Cooper Park landscaping shortcomings
  9. Barry Goldstein chairs subcommittee to review existing landscaping ordinance with city officials
  10. Clear cutting along I-77 near new theatres questioned
  11. Phase II of Greenway begun from Museum Road to East Broad Street, deteriorating bank noted beneath soccer fields and private school
  12. Grant application for computer equipment and tree care seminars completed by Jan Lefevre, Jane Srail and Lynn Miller
  13. Listing of North Carolina arboretums and gardens added to website by Jan Lefevre

  1. Extreme summer drought conditions prompt addition of temporary web page for drought tips
  2. 8 new Trees of Strength planted in beds around city square and dedicated during ceremony to honor 9-11 victims
  3. New Greenway section opens between Museum Road and water treatment plant
  4. Arborist Lynn Miller designs and coordinates planting of 123 trees and 139 shrubs in new Statesville Park & Soccer Complex
  5. Extreme ice storm prompts addition of storm recovery suggestions to temporary web page
  6. City Council places permanent ban on new billboards, discouraging unnecessary tree removal along Interstates
  7. Comprehensive web site launches; development, hosting and maintenance initially donated by Tree Commission member Jan Lefevre at Design Detail
  8. Earth Day Chair Bill Galloway coordinates free giveaway of 100+ trees at Lake Norman State Park
  9. Arbor Day Chair Jane Srail oversees successful event at Lakewood Park for more than 300 children
  10. Additional landscaping, including crepe myrtle trees, installed on north side of Hwy. 21 & I-40 interchange
  11. Landscape site plan by Arborist Lynn Miller and budget of $34,750 approved by City Council for Police Department renovation; installation scheduled for fall
  12. Preliminary landscape site plan by Arborist Lynn Miller approved for auxiliary Civic Center parking lot on W. Front Street

July 2001 - June 2002

  1. Andrews/ASMO Greenway opens between Salisbury Road and Statesville Middle School
  2. Arbor Day celebration held at Lakewood Park concentrating on children's nature education; area clubs/organizations host activity booths
  3. Board participates in Earth Day celebration at Lake Norman State Park, more than 100 free tree seedlings provided by International Paper for planting in pots by children to take home
  4. Template web site abandoned for lack of MSN server administration
  5. City Council elevates Tree Board to Commission status; no longer a committee of Appearance Commission
  6. Utility line clearing and city tree pruning moved under jurisdiction of City Arborist; approval given by City Council to increase Arborist's staff
  7. City maintains status as Tree City USA and receives 3 Growth Awards

July 2000 - June 2001

  1. Landscape Ordinance approved by City Council; all site plans pre-approved by TRC or City Council are grandfathered
  2. Honor/Memorial Tree Book compiled and placed in Mayor's office
  3. City maintenance personnel encouraged to attend training sessions on proper pruning methods to ensure activities do not harm city trees; recommendations made to maintenance supervisors and key personnel to attend service training as necessary
  4. Construction completed on Free Nancy Branch restoration project with planting of 75 trees
  5. Newtonville Greenway opens along Free Nancy Branch from Race Street to Center Street
  6. Slides and narration incorporated into tree care video
  7. Landscape seminar series held for public at Civic Center; excellent public response

  1. "Don't Top Trees" ad continued in Yellow Pages - resulting in fewer tree services listing topping in their ads and increase in requests for proper tree pruning to NC Forest Service
  2. Urban Tree Care Program held in cooperation with Iredell County Cooperative Ext. Service - series of seminars/workshops held for 33 regional tree professionals and amateurs and 1 city employee; Board requests City Council to urge city workers responsible for tree maintenance to attend future workshops

  5. Free Nancy Branch stream bank restoration begins: restoration of bank, riparian tree/shrub area, wildlife corridor, meadow habitat and improvement of urban trail system - cost of $295,000 covered in combination with grants from Clean Water Trust Fund and NC Dept. of Water Resources
  6. Lighted tabletop display board purchased through grant
  7. City tree professional Lynn Miller passes exam and completes requirements for Certified Arborist status, City Council upgrades appointment to permanent staff position
  8. Mayor forms diverse Landscape Ordinance Committee from boards/commissions, Parks & Recreation and Planning departments, and general public to draft city ordinance for development landscape projects; final draft presented to City Council
  9. Arbor Day celebration held March 17 at Civic Center - Board expands program to include professional talk by author/naturalist Dr. Phillip Manning; composting workshop by Ann Gill of Mecklenburg County Recycling; viewing of "The Forest Where We Live" narrated by actor Sam Waterston; free seedling giveaway
  10. Educational display on Help Stop Topping set up during Weekend in the Village festival, board members available to answer tree questions from public

July 1998 - June 1999

July 1997 - June 1998

  1. Large willow oak at site of new Civic Center professionally evaluated for health
  2. "Don't Top Trees" ad taken out in Yellow Pages
  3. Board adopts project to restore riparian along Free Nancy Branch from within Mac Anderson Park to Center Street; repairs to include reducing incline of bank; fascines planted as interim stabilizer
  4. Board partners with Natural Resources Conservation Service to conduct workshop for Western Region Field Representatives on stream bank restoration and stabilization
  5. Tree care videos purchased and shown on City cable channel during week of Arbor Day
  6. Board recommends:
    • ongoing tree care training for all city employees involved with trees
    • all Dept. and Div. heads to attend Master Arborist Training Program in fall
    • all utility line clearing to comply with "natural target method" of pruning
    • addition to city staff of trained & qualified professional to work with and be responsible for all city trees including enforcement of tree ordinance
    • Tree Board to serve as appeal board for ordinance
    • analyzing tree inventory for care, pruning, removal, etc.
  7. City maintains status as a Tree City USA

July 1996-June 1997

  1. Board sponsors "Project Learning Tree" training certification seminar for all Iredell County school teachers in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grades; certified teachers receive classroom learning aids
  2. City maintains status as a Tree City USA
