In
a solemn ceremony on September 11, 2002, Mayor John Marshall and representatives
of the Statesville Tree Commission, armed forces, police and fire departments,
schools and community, joined forces with other North Carolinians to plant memorial
Trees of Strength in memory of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the
U.S.
Red,
white and blue ribbons were tied on the eight new trees surrounding the square
to remember the nearly 3,000 people who died and to honor those who protect and
defend our country.
Commission
members Barry Gordon and Susan Stallard headed the Trees of Strength committee.
Local county centers of North Carolina Cooperative Extension supported the effort
by providing information on selecting and planting trees appropriate for different
regions of the state and Master Gardener volunteers will register all trees planted
through the Trees of Strength program.
As
the young trees grow strong, they will stand as a tribute to America's strength.
Groups and individuals are invited to participate by planting trees at their homes,
schools, businesses and places of worship.
