City-Owned Trees FAQs (Click HERE to view City-Owned Tree Ordinance) The trees on the right-of-way in front of my house/business need to be trimmed. How do I proceed? Call the city arborist to arrange for pruning. It is prohibited by law for property owners to trim city-owned trees in the right-of-way. I'd really like to plant new trees in the right-of-way adjoining my property. How do I proceed? Call the city arborist to request a site visit. If the site is suitable for planting, the arborist will make suggestions for allowable types of trees. Then, obtain a planting permit. How do I determine where the right-of-way begins and ends near my property? Call the city arborist to request a site visit. Right-of-way boundaries can vary by neighborhood, street or even by lot. If a sidewalk exists, the area between the sidewalk and the street is right-of-way. If there are overhead power lines, a general rule of thumb indicates 3' beyond the line as right-of-way. There appears to be someone other than a city official trimming right-of-way trees in my neighborhood. What should I do? Call the city arborist immediately to report any illegal pruning or removal.
